Terrace and Gardens ....

Morning Coffee in the Courtyard Garden

We have been very lucky to inherit virtually intact, a beautiful paved and sheltered Courtyard Garden, at the front of the house, facing South East.

Whereas the West side of the house has wonderful views, the front of the house gets the morning sun - wonderful if you want to linger over a pot of coffee in the morning!

In Spring or Summer, right into the Autumn, the Courtyard Garden is a lovely spot for morning coffee at the little table by the wisteria. Lots of sun, bees humming and butterflies fluttering – simply perfect!

Afternoon Tea or Drinks on the West facing Terrace

The West facing Terrace opens out from the Guest Sitting Room , with shallow steps leading down to the top lawn.

There are splendid views of the Dorset coast, the Downs and the village.

At around 4 o’clock, this is the place for afternoon tea.

Sunset and evening drinks

Later, at sunset, you can bring your own wine, we’ll supply the glasses and you can sit back, relax and enjoy the spectacle.

The Gardens

We have just over an acre of land, which we work organically. It is divided into five main areas: the top lawn, the rockery, the ponds, the meadow and the sunken tennis lawn.

To the front of the house is a sheltered, walled and paved garden - very much English cottage style. The terrace and top lawn have similar planting with the addition of magnificent views to the Dorset coast.

The top lawn is surrounded by woodland planting with three mature beech trees and a large cupressus macrocarpa on the north side.

The rockery surrounds the steeply sloping paths leading down to the ponds - again a restoration project.

Beyond is the meadow, with a range of spring and summer native wild flowers and grasses. This is a haven for wildlife. There are grass paths mown through, with a south facing "palm" garden.

The sunken tennis lawn has now been planted with a mix of perenials, ornamental grasses, shrubs and young fruit trees, divided by winding grass paths and including lawned sitting areas.  A flight of broad, shallow steps acts as a link to the rest of the garden, where we are also experimenting with new island borders of coastal tolerant plants.
